Australia’s rooftop solar fleet is, by most measures, the largest per capita in the world. What it has lacked, until recently, is enough batteries to store that solar for the evening peak. The federal government’s answer is the Cheaper Home Batteries Program — and the terms of that offer are changing in a way that rewards households who act now.
Since 1 July 2025, the Australian Government has funded a discount of around 30% on eligible small-scale battery systems connected to new or existing rooftop solar, delivered through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES). For homeowners across the state, this functions as a NSW solar battery rebate applied directly at the point of sale — no waiting for a cheque or a tax-time claim.
The scope is broad. Households, businesses, and community organisations can all claim this discount on battery systems from 5 kWh to 100 kWh. There’s no means test, and the Cheaper Home Batteries Program is available per property — so eligibility isn’t limited by income or held back for a narrow group of applicants.
The program has also grown well beyond its original scale. In December 2025, the government announced it would expand funding from an original estimate of $2.3 billion to around $7.2 billion over four years — a move expected to see more than two million Australians complete a home battery installation by 2030, adding roughly 40 gigawatt hours of storage capacity to the grid.
Modelling from the Australian Energy Market Commission found that even on a conservative outlook, wider battery uptake could deliver around a 3% reduction in bills annually across the whole energy system by smoothing expensive evening peaks — a benefit that flows to every bill-payer, not just battery owners.
The 30% headline hasn’t changed — but how it’s calculated has, and the direction of travel is downward for larger systems. From 1 May 2026, the rebate tapers as battery size increases from 0 to 50 kWh: support is strongest for the first 14 kWh, then reduces for each additional kWh beyond that.
The practical upshot: anyone weighing up a NSW solar battery rebate for a larger system has more to gain by locking in design and installation sooner rather than later.
